Filming a short movie

I wanted to share my experience with you on how I filmed a ‘short film’ called ‘Meeting with Mom’

What do you guys think about my short film?

Where I edited it – I have edited my film in Adobe premiere Pro programme. While I was editing, I have used many opinions from friends and family to get the perfect lighting, editing pace, cuts which are going to be suitable for my targeted audience and most likely be seen as a film done by a professional film producer. They have also told me what I have done fine and what I have done incorrectly, therefore I had an idea on what I should be working on.

Difficulties – I had some difficulties at first, as I did not have much experience in editing in adobe premier pro. However, my friend helped me and guide me on how to use it. I have used some raw footage from different clips to practise before editing the actual film. This was particularly useful as I have learnt a lot especially in terms of sound, therefore I felt confident and did not need help while editing.

Lighting – I have used a different lighting in the scene in which the girl character says an offensive word, it was used to highlight this moment and leave it as an enigma, therefore an audience will develop ideas on why I have done it. When I was editing this scene I was expecting audience to think about this contrast between shots, this went particularly well because many of people have mentioned that they liked it, however they did not understand it at first until the end of the film thinking it was a mistake made by me or wether it was planned. Also, using a strong statement at the end of the film was a good idea as many mentioned the title “OUR ACTIONS TODAY CREATE TOMORROW”, which obviously tells audience the main idea behind the film and seen as a truthful statement to many of them.

Sounds – I have used a romantic music in the background and chose to use close up shots of cakes when editing to show romantic mise en scene by the choices of cake accompanied by a romantic music. This went particularly well as many commented that it was pleasing to watch the scenes in the pastry.

Editing – In the scene where the guy and the girl are talking to each other, audience can see medium shots of a girl on the left and medium shots of a girl on the right. I have used it to show their conversation and show the view from the car. Shooting this scene was a bit difficult in terms of pratctical difficulties, as the road was bumpy, the camera was shaking, however it turned out good.

In the scene where everyone is sitting together I have used longshots to show the mise en scene in mother’s house, and the close ups of cakes, to the reference to first scenes in the pastry. Also, by using a close up shot of a girl eating the cake, audience can see happiness and guilt judging by the facial expressions.

Many have mentioned that they did not like the colours in my film, as they seem coldish, dull and uninteresting. The colours I have chosen were in cold/warm tones because the narrative is not that positive nor negative.

Overall, I had many good comments about my film and I am very happy how it came out. I have learnt to always prepare everything before making it done.

Vox Pop: What is your favourite place/area to shop in London and why?

Do you guys know where it is?

I have asked 5 people this question as shopping may be important to us because it gives us a means of escaping whatever stress we carry with us, or it can even be for enjoyment to make ourselves happy. It’s the best form of putting ourselves first and the best way to cheer ourselves up!

  1. Pierre Rolle

Dominican/British, 22, sagittarius : I like Soho, especially brands like ‘Stussy’, ‘Goodhood‘. I like Soho because it has a good variety of shops and different things. Also, Soho neighbourhood offers a fun shopping experience in a lively area that offers plenty of style.

2. Raniya Palymbetova

Kazakh, 19, sagittarius : I prefer to go shop to Selfridges, as there are many cool brands, also the location is nice and everything is easy to find, unlike Harrods for example. It is a shopping mall where you can find anything.

3. Neelam Tabassum

Pakistani, 20, Cancer : It is probably Oxford Street. I like that there are many restraunts near, easy to find anything you want, and many more new shops are developing. My favorite brand is ‘weekday new’, the clothes are very high quality, however pricey.

4. Zara Kulbayeva

Russian/Kazakh, 19, Taurus : One of my favourite ares of London to shop in is Covent Garden. The reason I enjoy shopping there is because of its bustling, busy and lively atmosphere. Covent Garden is a mixture of modern and fashion – forward brands, different conceptual stores and classical architecture, which makes it a place for everyone. I like it because you can find designers from all over the world selling in Covent Garden, which really reflects the diversity of London as a city.

5. Daniya Zhulamanova

Tatar, 18, Leo: I like Harrods! Harrods classifies different styles and brands into sections which makes init super easy to find what you’re looking for. Also, it has a reward system – for every five pounds, you get one pound back.

My trip to Geneva

“Switzerland is a country where very few things begin, but many things end.”F. Scott Fitzgerald

Two of my friends

How we decided to go Geneva?

Me and my friends were sitting at a restaurant bar and we were talking about universities, when suddenly someone mentioned going on a trip. Everyone had their own ideas of where we should go, and we did not take it seriously at first, until one of my friends just bought a ticket, and forced all of us to buy one as well.

Why?

View area

Most of our friends graduated schools in Switzerland, therefore we decided to go on a trip to Geneva and visit colleges and schools they have graduated from. There is only one word to describe Geneva, and that’s beautiful. Being there is nothing compared to looking at pictures or watching the places of interest on television. This is the place I love so much. The scenery in the country was marvellous. The air was fresh and we enjoyed the cool breeze blowing.

the fountain – ‘Jet d’eau’

Where we have stayed?

We stayed at Fraser Suites Geneva. It sits among Geneva’s hidden gems at a stone’s throw from the famous Jet d’eau fountain, with proximity to major city attractions, international banks, fine dining options and conference venues.  It is pricey, however we were more concerned about the safety (even tho Geneva is one of the safest cities in the world) – we could not enter the hotel without a key and security code.

Entertainment:

Les Armures restaurant

We went to a club called Java, as it is one of the famous places people go to at a night time.  Java was super fun and I would definitely recommend everyone to visit it. Also, we went to a restaurant called ‘Les Armures, in Hotel Et Restaurant’. Visiting Geneva without trying a Swiss cheese fondue is unthinkable! Don’t leave Geneva without trying this Swiss traditional dinner dish. Moreover, we went to Stettler, it is one of the older chocolate makers in Geneva. The shop has been on Avenue Blanc since 1947. Their speciality is the Pavé de Genève which are cubed pieced of chocolate truffled dusted with cocoa powder.
